002: Elmo hood

For THE FIRST CARD OF DECEMBER, we CELEBRATED THE ROYAL ENGAGEMENT WITH ELMO HOOD.

Born in Southampton in 1989 and a resident of London since 2010; Elmo is a self taught artist who turned to painting as a coping mechanism after a family bereavement.

Painting freehand, and using stencils and spray paint Elmo has developed a unique style; using layer upon layer of graffiti tags, symbols and paint splashes, he creates visually rich portraits and figurative pieces.

Hood's meteoric success is, in part, due to a collage Elmo created out of two playing cards in 2013, which went viral overnight. Even The Game bought one. Yes... The Game. His playing card pieces tell a story of love, heartbreak and betrayal which humanise and dramatise the humble pack of cards.

Hood most recently exhibited at Art Basel Miami, earlier this month.
